The Argentine architect was known for designing some of the world\u2019s most famous skyscrapers, including the Unicredit Tower in the Porta Nuova district in Milan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123334\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123334\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123333 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Torre-Unicredit-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Unicredit Tower, Porta Nuova district, Milan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Born in Tucum\u00e1n (1926), northern Argentina, <strong>C\u00e9sar Pelli<\/strong> studied architecture in Argentina and at the University of Illinois, where he was granted a scholarship in 1952. From 1954 to 1964 he joined <strong>Eero Saarinen<\/strong>\u2019studio, where he designed the <strong>TWA Terminal at JFK airport<\/strong>, which reopened as a hotel in 2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123328\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123328\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-123327\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/porta-nuova-1024x402.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"330\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The master plan of Porta Nuova, Milan, by C\u00e9sar Pelli<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Between the Sixties and the Seventies he alternated periods of work in Argentina with others in the USA, with different architecture firms, until<strong> 1977<\/strong>, when he <strong>founded<\/strong> <strong>Cesar Pelli and Associates, now Pelli Clarke and Associates, with architect Fred W. Clarke and his wife Diana Balmori<\/strong>, married at the end of the Forties.<\/p>\n<p>C\u00e9sar Pelli was a former dean of the Yale School of Architecture and <strong>in 1995 was awarded the AIA <\/strong>(American Institute of Architects)<strong> Gold Medal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123330\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123330\" style=\"width: 564px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123329 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/salesforce-tower_bassa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"886\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salesforce Tower, San Francisco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among C\u00e9sar Pelli\u2019s most renowned projects are the <strong>Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur<\/strong>, inaugurated in 1998, two landmarks of the Malaysian city-state, featuring in movies, and among the first examples of sustainable buildings thanks to the studies on ventilation and reuse of energy. Being 452 m tall (+ a 73 m pinnacle), they were the world\u2019s tallest towers until 2004.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123324\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123324\" style=\"width: 787px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123323 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Petronas_Twin_Towers-Kuala-lumpur_Bassa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"787\" height=\"591\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Petronas Twin Towers, a landmark of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>C\u00e9sar Pelli\u2019s works include many local \u201ctallest\u201d buildings<\/strong>, such as <strong>One Canada Square in London<\/strong>, the UK\u2019s tallest building until 2012, the <strong>Iberdrola Tower in Bilbao<\/strong> (the tallest building in the Basque Country), <strong>Gran Torre Santiago<\/strong> in Santiago del Chile (2010), the country\u2019s tallest building, and the <strong>Salesforce Tower in San Francisco<\/strong>, the tallest building in San Francisco, just to name a few.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123319 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/one-canada-square-offices-1024x435.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"357\" \/>One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London<\/p>\n<p><strong>A tribute to Milan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pcparch.com\/\">C\u00e9sar Pelli<\/a> left his mark also on Milan: he is the author of the <strong>master plan of the new Porta Nuova district<\/strong>, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicredit.it\/it\/chi-siamo\/presenza-in-italia\/unicredit-in-italia\/unicredit-tower.html\">Unicredit<\/a> Tower, inaugurated in 2014. The Unicredit Tower, 231 m, including the pinnacle, is the tallest building in Italy and a symbol of Milan\u2019s new skyline.
