The 2019 edition, held in June, focused <\/span><b>on the changes underway in the distribution, which are affecting the production<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Purchases of furniture, in the last 10 years, have grown by 25.3%<\/b> <b>worldwide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with an average annual growth rate of 2.3% (research by Pambianco based on the data provided by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csilmilano.it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSIL-Centro Studi Industria Leggera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The area in which the furniture sector experienced the greatest expansion is <\/span><b>Asia, with a growth of 108%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 2008 and 2018; while the United States grew by 17%, <\/span><b>European consumption fell by 17%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the rest of the world is essentially stable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For an industry that exports 51% of its production, such as the Italian furniture industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the growth of the world trade is good news. However, it is worth investigating how the distribution of furniture takes place, a critical factor for the sector, which in recent years is undergoing profound changes that are beginning to affect production cycles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122981\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122981\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-122981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/convegno_pambianco_candi.jpg\" alt=\"convegno-pambianco-design-candi.jpg\" width=\"525\" height=\"787\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pambianco Design Summit 2019, Alessio Candi illustrated the research<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Pambianco Design Summit 2019: the main distribution channels for design products<\/h3>\n<h4>Currently, distribution takes place through four main channels:<\/h4>\n<p><b>&#8211; Wholesale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including multi-brand and franchise stores)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211; Contract<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (turnkey projects or multiple off-the-shelf supplies)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211; E-commerce<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211; DOS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>monobrand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stores of large chains, high-end monobrand stores)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Luxury and premium products are (still) sold in stores<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a statistical figure, it is interesting to notice that there are about <\/span><b>6,000 multi-brand stores<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world, <\/span><b>2,000 of which in Italy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another figure, which is particularly interesting for Italian production, is that people buy <\/span><b>premium and luxury products in stores mainly \u2013 60% in the premium segment and 85% in the luxury segment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122951\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-122951\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/MAH_JONG_Dragon-by-JPG-1024x703.jpg\" alt=\"mash-jong-roche-bobois.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"577\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah Jong sofa by Roche Bobois (designed by Hans Hopfer in 1971)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Contract: a channel on the rise<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A further analysis reveals that contract is a distribution channel that is rapidly expanding, as proven by almost all the entrepreneurs who participated in the conference. This great development in the contract field is beginning to influence companies\u2019 production methods. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As explained by <\/span><b>Angelo Meroni<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, President of <\/span><a href=\"\/?p=106903\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a company that began to heavily invest in contract in 2004, with a dedicated team, \u201c&#8230;Today Lema\u2019s contract division has a turnover ranging from 25 to 30 million Euros\u201d. However, adds Meroni, \u201ccontract turnover fluctuates greatly, because it involves complex projects, with variable timing. Therefore, it is necessary to be organized to deal with ever-changing workloads, both from a financial and a productive point of view, where great flexibility is needed. We are lucky because we are in Brianza, a region with a network of excellent suppliers and sub-suppliers, able to work facing these conditions. Moreover, contract is a very interesting testing ground \u2013 concludes Meroni \u2013 as it needs a certain amount of products, unlike the residential sector. Once new products and materials have been developed, they can be produced for the residential market as well.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, contract is an interesting channel but it requires dedicated investments. The other companies that took part in the conference, such as <\/span><a href=\"\/?p=109245\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IOC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Caterina Pepori, confirmed that the contract sector offers opportunities for development. IOC, in particular, has been recently rebranded to meet the needs of the office sector, which is undergoing profound transformations as well<\/span>.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-122964\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/silvera-saint-germain-sr2-mai-2019-1024x493.jpg\" alt=\"silvera-saint-germain-parigi.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"404\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" \/> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silvera store on Boulevard Saint-Germain, in Paris<\/span>[\/caption]<\/p>\n<h3>E-commerce: mainly low-cost<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E-commerce is growing, although <\/span><b>in Italy it does not exceed 1-2% of the market<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By the way, <\/span><b>if we consider the United States as a reference market, where e-commerce represents 13% of the market, we can see that it is reserved for mass market products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The portal with the highest turnover, in fact, is <\/span><b>Wayfair.com<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which totals <\/span><b>$6.8 billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, followed by <\/span><b>Amazon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><b>$6 billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Westwing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (former Dalani in Italy), with <\/span><b>$250 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among the hybrid brands, which have both physical and online stores, are Williams Sonoma, with a $3.1 billion turnover and an e-commerce share of 57%, Ikea, with a $1.9 billion turnover and an e-commerce share of 5%, and Maisons du Monde, with an e-commerce share of 23% and a $250 million turnover. All these chains of stores and portals specialize in popular and low-end products; <\/span><b>the only portal that records interesting performances in the United States in a higher range is Restoration Hardware, which has an e-commerce share of 12% with a turnover of about $300 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few data,<\/span><b> but enough to realize that for Italian companies, 70% of which are specialized in premium or luxury products, e-commerce is not a priority yet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122988\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-122988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/wyafai-com-hp-1024x507.jpg\" alt=\"wayfair.com.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"416\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homepage of Wayfair.com, the world\u2019s most important portal dedicated to furniture<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, from the Pambianco Design Summit 2019 it emerges that the furniture market is undergoing a profound transformation and that distribution is changing as well. <\/span><b>Changes are rapid and companies must be increasingly faster and more responsive in perceiving the changes taking place in the market<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The good news is that, aside from Europe, the furniture market is growing worldwide.
