And <strong>Michael Thonet is an ideal representation of the craftsman-innovator <\/strong>who becomes an entrepreneur thanks to a winning idea.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_155524\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-155524\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-155524 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Michael_Thonet_and_colleagues.jpg\" alt=\"thonet-sedia-14.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"743\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-155524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Thonet with his colleagues<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Born on July 2, 1796 in Boppard (near Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate), Michael Thonet could have settled for the quiet life of a carpenter, in the workshop started by his father. Instead, from early on, he began experimenting with bending wood to build new and different things. At first, he hot glued strips of wood together to make curved feet and dynamic shapes. Then, as the business grew, he began to study the technique of bending wood with steam to obtain a material also suitable for hot climates (with high temperatures, glued wood come unglued and the chairs fell apart).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_155530\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-155530\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-155530 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Thonet_Production_Bentwood_Steaming\u00a9Philipp_Thonet.jpg\" alt=\"thonet-sedia-14.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"659\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-155530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How Thonet chairs are produced today<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the beginning of the 1840s, <strong>Michael Thonet moved to Vienna with his family and began to receive increasingly important commissions, such as Caf\u00e9 Daum, for which he developed the No. 4 Chair<\/strong>. In 1851, Michael Thonet&#8217;s chairs had great success at London\u2019s Great Exhibition and <strong>in 1856, in Moravia, he established his first company<\/strong>. In the following years, Michael Thonet perfected steam bending of wood, which paved the way for the first industrial production of Gebr\u00fcder Thonet chairs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_155526\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-155526\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-155526 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Thonet_Bystritz_grinding_shop_historical.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"741\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-155526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thonet factory in the 19th century<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Thonet and the No. 14 Chair: the origins of industrial furniture<\/h3>\n<p>With the first factory, Thonet developed a construction technique similar to an assembly line: many pieces were built in series and then assembled. <strong>In 1859, Thonet developed the No. 14 Chair, a chair of tubular wood with a Vienna straw seat<\/strong>. The Thonet No. 14 paved the way for a series of revolutionary innovations, both in production and in logistics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_155532\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-155532\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-155532 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Thonet_The_Thonet_Principle_historical.jpg\" alt=\"thonet-sedia-14.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"694\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-155532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No. 14 Chair: 6 pieces and 10 screws<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Thonet succeeded in developing a chair that could be assembled with six pieces and ten screws<\/strong>. The disassembled chair was easy to pack and ship. A crate of one cubic meter contained <strong>36 disassembled chairs to be assembled<\/strong>, complete with screws and without the need for glue (an important detail for hot climates). One of the first examples of sustainable design. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why <strong>over 50 million Thonet No. 14 chairs were sold between 1859 and 1930<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discover the<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/en\/2018\/05\/31\/trend-from-milan-salone-del-mobile-2018-woven-cane-furniture\/\">Vienna straw<\/a><\/strong><strong> trend<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_139973\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-139973\" style=\"width: 591px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-139973 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/thonet_36_pezzi_packaging-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"550\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-139973\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As early as the mid-19<sup>th<\/sup> century one cubic meter contained 36 disassembled chairs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>The first furniture advertisement<\/h3>\n<p>Besides inventing a new technique and a revolutionary production system, Michael Thonet also invented a new way of presenting a product, with the first brochures with illustrations of the various models. And he was probably also one of the first industrialists to deal with the issue of licensing. In order to meet all the requests, the production of chairs was licensed to different companies at first scattered throughout Europe and then worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-155528\" src=\"http:\/\/www.designdiffusion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Thonet_portfolio_overview_1859.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Michael Thonet died in 1871, but his family has been running the business to this day. In the first half of the 20th century, with Bauhaus and the metal tube, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thonet.de\/en\">Thonet<\/a> brand took center stage again.
