In Hellissandur, Icelandic studio ARK\u00cdS designed a sustainable visitor center for Sn\u00e6fellsj\u00f6kull National Park, built to meet the rigorous BREEAM standards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Sn\u00e6fellsj\u00f6kull Visitor Center<\/em> in Hellissandur, located on the Sn\u00e6fellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland, was the winning proposal in an international competition launched in 2006. The project was designed by the renowned Icelandic architecture firm ARK\u00cdS arkitektar ehf.<\/a><\/strong> Construction began in 2020 and was completed in 2022, with the official opening in March 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An immersive experience through lava and landscape<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019edificio non \u00e8 solo una struttura ma un percorso tra cultura e ambiente. Attraverso un sentiero che si snoda su un mare di lava, si accede progressivamente al \u201cGlacial Cape\u201d (J\u00f6kulh\u00f6f\u00f0i<\/em>), evocazione visiva del ghiacciaio Sn\u00e6fellsj\u00f6kull. Come gli occhi di una balena, l\u2019osservatore percepisce il paesaggio in modo nuovo, catturato da scorci che si rivelano gradualmente lungo la passeggiata. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Innovative, Earthquake-Resistant Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The center is composed of two distinct sections: the Glacier Cape<\/em>, which houses exhibition spaces, and the Fishbone<\/em>, which hosts park offices and services. One of its most striking features is a cantilevered section hovering above the lava field\u2014an engineering challenge solved with innovative, earthquake-resistant construction techniques. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facades are clad with two types of timber: horizontal for the Glacier Cape and vertical for the Fishbone. A central walkway allows visitors to pass straight through the building, while rooftop staircases lead to an observation deck overlooking the Sn\u00e6fellsj\u00f6kull glacier and the village of Hellissandur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainable Construction and BREEAM Certification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The entire project was designed and built following the BREEAM<\/strong> certification standards, ensuring a low environmental impact. All materials were eco-friendly and FSC-certified, waste was minimized and tracked, and the contractor had to comply with strict environmental protocols throughout construction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
