A project by BE_Design that combines sustainable architecture, tourism, and women’s economic inclusion in the Virunga region<\/h2>\n\n

At the foot of the majestic Virunga volcanoes in northern Rwanda, the new headquarters of Virunga Mountain Spirits<\/em> rises as a symbol of female entrepreneurship and local development. Designed by architecture firm BE_Design, the 1,100 sqm distillery and agro-tourism site is located along a key road frequented by farmers and tourists heading toward Volcanoes National Park. <\/p>\n\n

A landmark in dialogue with its surroundings<\/h3>\n\n

At the core of the building lies the distillery room: a transparent, light-filled volume that houses a striking 10-meter tall copper and stainless steel vodka still. Surrounding this central space are thick volcanic stone walls, hand-shaped on site, enclosing all auxiliary functions\u2014offices, kitchen, tasting room, bar, reception, and gift shop. The architecture draws inspiration from the strength of the surrounding volcanoes and reinterprets the traditional Rwandan Imigongo<\/em> patterns found on nearby buildings. <\/p>\n\n

Local materials and social impact<\/h3>\n\n

This project stands out for its ethical and sustainable approach. The majority of materials were locally sourced, and construction involved a local workforce with an average of 35% female participation. Women received on-site training, fair wages, savings tools, and valuable construction skills\u2014leaving a lasting positive impact on the community. <\/p>\n\n

The sustainable architecture of BE Design, a studio committed to change<\/h3>\n\n

BE_Design<\/a>, founded by Bruce Engel after his time in East Africa, specializes in educational and community-driven architecture in rural regions of Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ghana. In addition to these socially conscious projects, the studio also designs energy-efficient homes in New York, earning international recognition and awards. <\/p>\n\n
