Art and AI: Marcondiro’s “Primitive Robot” on display in New York

The sculpture is made of Carrara marble and entirely crafted by artificial intelligence in 3D graphics with avatar movement.

The sculpture “Primitive Robot” by Marcondiro lands in New York, made of marble and entirely crafted by artificial intelligence in 3D graphics with avatar movement. It will be displayed in the United States from March to April 2025 at the “Carlo Rambaldi Foundation” exhibition, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Oscar-winning artist and special effects creator, known for E.T. and Alien.

“Primitive Robot” is inspired by the “Giants of Mont’e Prama” and was designed and created by Marco Marchese Borrelli, known as Marcondiro, an artistic producer, musician, and director. Borrelli is also the CEO and founder of the cross-media and film production company Primigen, registered as an innovative startup, and the label with a recording studio featuring both vintage and next-generation equipment, Parodoi Ets.

The inspiration that led me to create the character ‘Primitive Robot’,” says Borrelli, “comes from the sculptures of the ‘Giants of Mont’e Prama,’ dating back to the Nuragic civilization and discovered in 1974 in the Sinis area of Cabras, in northwestern Sardinia. Carved in calcareous stone, the ‘Giants’ slept for about 3,000 years before being uncovered. After receiving the iconographic input/imprinting, I decided to link their powerful image to the themes of artificial intelligence and RoboEthics.”

Art Exchange, the exhibition in New York
Sponsored by the Rambaldi Foundation under the umbrella of the 2025 centenary celebrations and organized by the Rambaldi Promotions Cultural Association in collaboration with the Culture Lab of Long Island City, the exhibition “Art Exchange: A Bridge Between Italy and America” is a unique event aimed at uniting Italian and American talents, creating an artistic dialogue that embraces cultures, styles, and visions.

The exhibition has been curated by Daniela Rambaldi and Tess Howsam, with the collaboration of Simona HeArt for the artistic coordination of Italian artists and Giuseppe Lombardi. The exhibition, which will take place in New York at the Culture Lab in Long Island City from March 6 to April 20, 2025, will be an unmissable opportunity to admire high-quality works, discover new talents, and reflect on the power of art as a tool for universal connection.

Marcondiro, artist’s bio

Marco Marchese Borrelli, known as Marcondiro, is a multimedia artist who has been experimenting with various artistic languages since 2012. With a background in ethnomusicology, he has explored folk music traditions, singer-songwriting, and classical electronic music. Sculpture, for him, represents the “sonic materialization” of this artistic research. Through his works, he explores contemporary themes of great relevance, such as social equity and ecological awareness, presenting an optimistic vision of a future where technology and humanity coexist harmoniously. Among his most important projects is the “Primitive Robot” project, a character that merges art, robotic ethics, and artificial intelligence. This work has been showcased in various artistic contexts, including the Vertical Movie Festival, where he won the first prize with the musical video art piece “Captcha Cha.”
