With a reproduction of Casa Lana, Triennale inaugurates Sala Sottsass, a permanent space dedicated to the great master
On December 3, 2021, Triennale Milano opens Sala Sottsass on the first floor of the Palazzo dell’Arte. Sala Sottsass houses a permanent installation reproducing the interior of an apartment, Casa Lana. The private residence was a project by Ettore Sottsass in Milan, from the mid-sixties, and now it is accessible to the public thanks to a donation by Barbara Radice. A series of donations will form the nucleus of an important fund of architect Ettore Sottsass jr, within the permanent collection of Triennale Milano. Moreover, various exhibitions and events will take place around the permanent display of Casa Lana, highlighting different aspects of the master’s work and thought.
The reconstructed part of Casa Lana at Triennale is the core of the original apartment, exactly as it was designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1968. Talking about this project Sottsass said: “The basic idea is that at the center of the room there is a wooden structure (as if it were a small house inside the room or another room within the room), which acts as a living room. Around it, on the four sides, the remaining areas are organized to serve various special operations.” In this way, there was the double advantage of saving the space of the hallways, while the living room became a kind of “little square” from which you could see the entrance, but with “sheltered” corners, such as sofas in niches, perfect for reading.
