Color in Italian Homes: A Research by Sigma Coatings

From the research by Sigma Coatings: the living styles of Italian people

Sigma Coatings carried out a research on the use of color in domestic environments, titled “The emotional styles of living.” From the results of the survey, it emerges that for Italian people the paint color of their walls is very important, and interacts with the deepest aspects of their personality, involving the emotional sphere and influencing the well-being.

Sigma Coatings’ research shows that 20% of Italians (mainly men, 25%) associate color with the concept of positivity, happiness and relaxation, while 20% (mainly women, 22%) associate color with feelings and emotions; followed by creativity in choices and combinations (19%), energy, vitality and freedom (18%).

The chromatic universe of Italian people

In the Italian culture, the use of color at home is very rich in terms of chromatic variety. According to 75% of Italians, color at home is the basis for well-being. As a consequence, it is not surprising that almost all Italians have a favorite color (97%) and associate it with specific emotions (96%).

White is their favorite color (24%), followed by blue and yellow (10%), red (9%), blue and green (8%), orange (6%), beige (4%), grey and pink (2%), lilac, purple, blue, light yellow and golden yellow (1%). The functions most attributed to colors in everyday life are confidence, familiarity, compatibility, experimentation, creativity.

Women and color at home: Italian women’s favorite colors are yellow, green and blue

The survey carried out by Sigma Coatings shows that colors represents emotions (22%), creativity (19%) and energy (17%). Interviewees stated that they feel good at home if the paint color of the walls is their favorite color: according to Italian women, home and color are complementary. The favorite colors from north to south are yellow, green and blue.

From north to south, Italian women paint Italy in a thousand shades, expressing different preferences. In the north, yellow is the favorite color (26%), associated with cheerfulness (23%), warmth (23%) and sunny disposition (13%). Other warm colors follow, such as orange (25%) and red (20%), symbols of cheerfulness (19%) and energy (22%) respectively. Italian women prefer to use these colors in gathering spaces such as the kitchen and the living room.

Also among the women from Central Italy yellow is very popular (8%), but in these areas green emerges as a fresher and more restful color (11%), associated with serenity (28%) and peace of mind (24%), used for the walls of the areas dedicated to relaxation, such as the bedrooms and the living room.

The preferences of women from the south fall into two categories. On the one hand, we have blue and light blue (14%), with their obvious reference to the nuances of the sea, a color that is associated with serenity (32%) and peace of mind (39%), ideal for the bedrooms. On the other hand, we have red (12%), synonymous with passion (19%), capable of cheering up many of the interviewees (11%), who use it mainly in the living room.

The colors chosen by the Italians to rest well: pink, blue and yellow

Pink ranks first among the colors chosen by the Italians for a good rest. According to 12.1% of the interviewees pink conveys serenity, calm and happiness. 10.2% prefer light blue, famous for conveying serenity, tranquility and calm. Yellow comes third: it  brings joy, warmth and serenity. [Text Giuliana Maio]
