On December 19th, 2020, Italian President Sergio Mattarella launched the second phase of Quirinale Contemporaneo
Launched in June 2019, Quirinale Contemporaneo is an initiative by the President of the Italian Republic, aimed at promoting Italian art and design at the Quirinal Palace. On June 2nd, 2019, 68 works, including 36 works by contemporary artists and 32 design objects, were presented. Among the best examples of Made in Italy production, these furniture pieces were placed in the courtyards, halls and gardens of the Quirinal Palace. In the photo galleries, you can see the products selected for Quirinale Contemporaneo 2020.

Italian design at Quirinale Contemporaneo 2020
In December 2020, 75 items, distributed between the Quirinal Palace and the Presidential estate of Castelporziano, have joined the collection. As Mattarella highlighted, “It is precisely in the harshest and most difficult moments that the need for art and culture is most keenly felt, due to their ability to generate fundamental energy for our individual and collective life.” For this reason, despite this difficult period, Quirinale Contemporaneo goes on, although currently it can be visited only virtually.
The Quirinale Contemporaneo collection, curated by Cristina Mazzantini, head of cultural heritage of the Quirinal, includes many Italian design icons – both industrial products and art design collections. Introducing Italian design at the Quirinal has two merits: it brings institutions closer to one’s personal life, and it bring visitors closer to Italian design by placing furnishings in the courtly atmosphere of a museum. In this way, the residence of the President of the Republic becomes more democratic and familiar.

The Quirinal for Made in Italy
The new Quirinale Contemporaneo 2020 collection includes 33 new Italian design items designed by 19 designers, which join the other 32. Designers and companies from different periods and geographical areas have been selected to provide a representation of Italian design as inclusive as possible. Works and products express the tradition of craftsmanship in fine workmanship, as well as the industrial quality of the most advanced technology. It is important to underline that furnishings are not just showcased but they form part of an interior design project where the items harmonize with the existing interior architecture.
