The Superdesign Show, the event organized by Superstudio in the spaces of Superstudio Più, is ready to enliven Milan’s Tortona district also this year, on the occasion of the long-awaited Fuorisalone 2022. The new edition, under the creative direction of Gisella Borioli and the artistic direction of Giulio Cappellini, is entitled Looking Ahead. Designers and companies from all over the world have been invited to design, conceive and create, looking “beyond” things, appearances, the here and now.

Several exhibitions and installations will address the issue of sustainability, presenting concrete proposals to redesign the life of the future on Earth. The 2022 edition of the Superdesign Show, on the other hand, will look like a “village”; it will be organized into areas of interest with “buildings” and site-specific installations.

Superdesign Show 2022: not-to-be-missed exhibitions and installations

Asian Impact

The West has become accustomed to watching with increasing interest what happens in the countries of the East and the Far East. Distant worlds, both geographically and culturally, in continuous evolution, which are proving to be increasingly important in the world of design.

Based on this reflection, the Superdesign Show will present a large choral exhibition in which Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore will interpret the global world with innovative proposals respecting their traditions.

As a preview we can mention Toyo Aluminium with “Resonance: Vortex to Diversity,” an aluminum sculpture designed with pigments by Toshiya Hayashi and Hokuto Ando. And “Look into Nature,” furniture made with igusa (a variety of reed grown in rice paddies), designed for Japanese brand Adal by German designer Michael Geldmaker.

Curator Eggarat Wongcharit, on the other hand, will exhibit the best Thai design in the Slow Hand Design Exhibition 2022.  Organized by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), this project will reflect on the likelihood of pandemic-related unpredictability with the theme “Uncertainty = Certainty.”

Supergarden

In the large art-garden at the entrance of Superstudio, surrounded by Flavio Lucchini’s sculptures, it will be possible to admire a small house of 25 square meters, entirely made of glass, by Tiny Company, and discover what’s new about open-air furniture, the new indoor/outdoor functions of objects and architecture in a nature-friendly vision.

Home Switch Home

New technologies have allowed robots to establish more intimate and concrete relationships with human beings, thanks to the enhancement of their ability to listen, speak and interact. Haier, with “Home Switch Home” and the three immersive installations of its brands – Haier, Candy and Hoover – will showcase the ultra-technological home of the future. More than 1,000 square meters will be dedicated to the Smart Home, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, interpreted in a different way by the three brands.

Case Cozy Così

Although the attention is focused on an imaginative digital future where dream homes will be located in the metaverse, the desire for comfort, simplicity and essentiality is still strong in every part of the world. With this in mind, the Superdesign Show will host an exhibition showcasing a series of installations created by designers from all over the world, with objects alternating soft shapes, minimalist traits and human-technology.

Each room will present innovative and comfortable environments, furnished with objects with a strong symbolic and sentimental value. On display will be the reassuring living rooms by Sits (Poland), the essential and technological living room by mui Lab (Japan) and the versatile accessories by Objkt Studio (Singapore). There will also be My Air Pure’s hemisphere that purifies the air in the living room with the Space project by Giorgio d’Alessandro, and the home automation solutions by Black Nova. In LFM’s installation, the large sofa by designer Alessio Salvo expresses its comfort in the shape of a word.

Art Interaction

At the entrance of Superstudio Più visitors will be welcomed by an imposing petrified forest created by sculptor Maria Cristina Carlini. The work has been designed to remind us of the state of imminent danger in which nature finds itself, and to be a cry for help for its salvation.

Continuing the visit, you will find Habits Design Studio with “Sincronia”, an interaction design installation that investigates the relationship between movement, light and sound within a circle, interacting with the energy generated by Kataklò, the athletic dancers led by Giulia Staccioli, or by the visitors.

Materials Metamorphosis

The collective exhibition “Urban Matter(s)-Material Reduction for a Lighter City”, curated by Materially, will present solutions and guidelines to the problems and major issues related to urban living, starting from the reduction of the impact of emissions, energy or materials.

Donne&Design

During the Fuorisalone 2022, at the Superdesign Show it will also be possible to visit an all-female creative installation exhibiting some of the most representative works created by established designers and young artists. Each artist will be invited to exhibit a single product, provided that it is of recent invention. Among the protagonists there will also be Paola Navone, Ilaria Marelli, and the collective of artists and artisans of FoodDesignStories.

Italian Masters

There will be room for Italian designers and artisans committed to testifying to the widespread Italian creativity. In the project “Fingerprint Südtirol”, ten artisan companies from South Tyrol will showcase high mastery, artistic craftsmanship, and contemporary design. The “Fuoriserie- Unicità per il domani” group show, organized by CNA (Confederazione Nazionale dell’Artigianato e della Piccola e Media Impresa), will showcase art and design pieces by seven interesting artisan businesses from all over Italy.

Future Now

Rossinavi will present the first all-electric catamaran, relying on zero-emission photovoltaic panels 90% of the time. The installation “Blu-E, The Underwater Experience” at the Superdesign Show in Milan will invite you to enter a large experiential “box”; the box simulates underwater life and makes it possible to discover the important role of phytoplankton in our existence.

As for new mobility, at Fuorisalone 2022, Lexus will present “Lexus-Sparks of Tomorrow,” an electrifying vision for the future of automotive design, with ON/, an installation by architect and designer Germane Barnes. Lexus will also unveil the prototypes by the finalists of the Lexus Design Award 2022 and showcase the concept for mobility in 2040 by students from the Royal College of Art in London.

Third Dimension

The third dimension is the one that has allowed technology to transform the pressed sheet of any material from flat to volumetric. Over time, this production process has made it possible to create, without the help of man, increasingly large and complex three-dimensional objects. With the “Reflections” collection, Israeli company Stratasys will show how this technique can also be applied to fabrics, clothes, accessories, packaging, cosmetics and much more. On the other hand, Japanese company Forum8, with the theme “Beyond reality and design”, demonstrate how the latest 3D technologies can be used to create objects with extreme precision.

Dreamers

This section of the Superdesign Show will focus on the young talents of tomorrow. Among these, there is an interesting experiment by the University of Malta – SACES: Alka, the fabric obtained from algae, the result of a research carried out by the students.

Architect-Tour

The Superdesign Show will also dedicate a space to architecture, with a series of talks to attend and videos not to be missed. Magnetti Building, for example, will present the important restoration of the Donizetti Theatre in Bergamo through some videos. The theater, restored with cutting-edge techniques and prefabs, has preserved its original beauty. Matrix4Design, together with journalist Laura Ragazzola, will invite you to follow their video reportages every day, dedicated to the most famous architecture studios in the world.

DNA.DesignNaturaArchitettura postponed to Design Week 2023

On the occasion of the Fuorisalone 2022, Superstudio will hold a conference to present DNA.DesignNaturaArchitettura. This new project will take place during the Design Week 2023 at Superstudio Maxi, the only Italian location that is completely sustainable and awarded with the Leed Gold certification.

Next year, DNA.DesignNaturaArchitettura will animate Superstudio Maxi dealing with design from a new and alternative point of view. The focus of the event, in fact, will shift the attention from the inside to everything that makes up a city, with particular attention to Milan and the protagonists of its transformation.
