Maximall Pompeii: an unmissable experience of shopping, history, and sustainability at the foot of Mount Vesuvius
Maximall Pompeii, the ambitious project by Irgen RE Group, opened its doors last December in Torre Annunziata (NA), just a few steps from the famous Pompeii archaeological site and with the unique backdrop of Mount Vesuvius. With a commercial area of 50,000 square meters and a revolutionary concept, Maximall Pompeii redefines the shopping mall experience by transforming it into a Social Hub integrated with the surrounding territory. The new structure has already attracted millions of national and international visitors, becoming a driving force for the Vesuvius area’s development and a symbol of innovation and sustainability.
Innovative design inspired by the history of Pompeii
The architectural project, designed by the award-winning studio Design International under the direction of Architect Davide Padoa, is inspired by the urban structure of ancient Roman cities, including Pompeii itself. The complex modernizes the Via dell’Abbondanza, the main street that connects the two main buildings, fully permeable to light and air, with walkways offering views of the sea, Mount Vesuvius, and the islands of Capri and Ischia.
Along this pedestrian axis, there are the Fountain, the Outdoor Mall Square, and the Multimedia Square—modern reinterpretations of the ancient spaces dedicated to socialization and entertainment. The Outdoor Square, in particular, stands out for the presence of the ‘Pergule,’ kiosks selling local specialties and dining areas that, in a contemporary key, evoke the concept of the market as a central place for gathering and exchange.
An investment that enhances the local area
With an investment of over 200 million euros, Maximall Pompeii is part of a territorial redevelopment plan that has involved the coastal area between Torre Annunziata and Castellammare di Stabia. The project required the collaboration of the Campania Region, the Superintendence for Fine Arts, and local institutions to ensure a respectful and innovative integration with the historical and cultural heritage of the area.
Shopping, tourism, and entertainment
The complex spans an area of 200,000 sqm, with approximately 50,000 sqm covered. Inside, there are 170 national and international brands, spread across 140 store units and 30 food units over two levels. The entirely glass roof gives visitors the sensation of walking outdoors. Additionally, the complex houses a 4-star Moxy Hotel (Marriott Group) with 135 rooms, a 1,000-seat auditorium, a cinema with 7 screens, and a conference room of approximately 3,000 sqm. To complete the offering, there is an outdoor amphitheater square of 6,500 sqm where visitors can enjoy the spectacle of the dancing fountain, with water jets reaching over 25 meters in height, and a second multimedia square inside (800sqm)
The complex also includes a large parking area with 3,300 parking spaces and dedicated spaces for 30 tourist buses. In line with its sustainable redevelopment approach, Maximall Pompeii offers a 50,000 sqm equipped green park, open to the public, and a 6,000 sqm rooftop where visitors can enjoy jogging or relax while admiring the breathtaking view of the Gulf of Naples.
A bridge between the past and the future
The cultural offering of Maximall Pompeii also includes “Pompeii Alive 3D,” an immersive experience created in collaboration with Discovery Channel, allowing visitors to relive daily life in Pompeii in 79 A.D. This edutainment initiative, along with the integration with the Pompeii Archaeological Site, strengthens the role of the mall as a meeting point between history, culture, and innovation.
With Maximall Pompeii, Southern Italy welcomes the country’s first Shopping Resort, blending tradition, sustainability, and innovation in an internationally-minded project that enhances the region’s historical identity while looking to the future of tourism and commerce.
