Art Week Tokyo 2025: contemporary art across the city

From November 5 to 9, 2025, Art Week Tokyo returns with its most ambitious edition yet, featuring 50+ museums and galleries, special exhibitions, talks, and more

The fourth edition of Art Week Tokyo transforms the city into a living, breathing art circuit. In partnership with Art Basel, the event gathers over 50 top-tier museums, galleries, and institutions, including the National Art Center, Tokyo, Mori Art Museum, and the historic Tokyo Gallery + BTAP.

AWT Focus: “What Is Real?” curated by Adam Szymczyk

The centerpiece exhibition, “What Is Real?”, curated by renowned Zurich-based curator Adam Szymczyk, explores the shifting notion of reality in the digital age. Featuring around 100 works by 60 Japanese and international artists, the exhibition is hosted at the Okura Museum of Art, with exhibition design by architect Hiroyuki Kimura.

Highlights from the 2025 programme

  • AWT Video: “Rituals” — curated by Keiko Okamura, this free screening program explores everyday rituals through short films, presented in Marunouchi.
  • AWT Talks — major conversations with international curators and museum directors. Highlights include a Directors Conversation and a symposium led by Naomi Beckwith (Guggenheim NY, documenta 16).
  • AWT Bar — a pop-up space designed by Ichio Matsuzawa, with artist-made cocktails and affordable gourmet bites by Michelin-starred chef Shinobu Namae.
  • Architectural Tours — led by Kazuyo Sejima, these exclusive tours explore Tokyo’s lesser-known residential architecture.

AWT Bus: free shuttle through Tokyo’s art scene

Running from November 7–9, the AWT Bus connects all venues across seven routes. Shuttles depart every 15 minutes and allow hop-on, hop-off flexibility — a unique way to explore Tokyo’s vibrant art ecosystem.

Must-See exhibitions

Among the main exhibitions:

  • “Prism of the Real” at the National Art Center, in collaboration with M+, Hong Kong — exploring Japanese contemporary art from 1989–2010.
  • “Aki Sasamoto’s Life Laboratory” at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo — a dynamic mid-career retrospective with live performances.
  • Primordial Future Forest by Sou Fujimoto at the Mori Art Museum.
  • Exhibitions by artists such as Shinro Ohtake, Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho, along with many historic galleries and new local and international spaces.

A platform for long-term growth

Led by founder Atsuko Ninagawa, Art Week Tokyo aims to strengthen ties between artists, galleries, institutions, and global audiences. The 2025 edition expands this mission with more international collaborations and a flexible, decentralized format. Entry to all galleries is free. Participating museums offer discounted admission to Art Week Tokyo visitors. AWT Focus requires a ticket.
