The Italian companies in the ADI Design Index 2020, including 239 products and projects
ADI Design Index 2020 represents the first step on the path leading to Compasso d’Oro 2022. 207 projects (plus 32 Targa Giovani projects), divided into 13 categories, represent the 2019/2020 design period. The leitmotif of the next three years is “Responsible Sustainable Development.”
Among all the selected products, 46 are furniture and lighting products, and 21 are social design initiatives. Eighteen products are dedicated to mobility and 18 to work; 17 belong to the communication category and 16 to service design. The presence of research is also significant, with 12 publishing initiatives and 11 applied researches.
Over 150 experts, divided into thirteen territorial committees, select projects and products throughout Italy. As a matter of fact, a research carried out by Fondazione Symbola in collaboration with ADI, POLI.design and Deloitte Private, demonstrates that design-oriented companies are present all over Italy. Although the design system is mainly concentrated in the north of the country, the map obtained from the research confirms that design is well rooted throughout the peninsula and islands.

Despite the fact that until 2020 creativity was concentrated in the provincial capitals, the pandemic has changed a few things. The rediscovery of outdoor spaces seems to have opened up new scenarios with respect to the development of cities and their communities. For the future, it will be necessary to rethink the management of services to citizens in light of this paradigm shift.
The ADI Design Index 2020 has also examined some products that were not considered before, such as filtering masks, a mask for oxygen administration, and other objects whose need has arisen from the change in behavior imposed by the health emergency.
The products of ADI Design Index are on show at ADI Design Museum until June 20, 2021.

Byobu, by Marc Sadler for Antrax, is a radiator inspired by the traditional Japanese screen, which becomes a room divider by rotating a door around a wall-mounted pin. The flattened knob, Momoko, can conceal a hanging robe.
Intondo, by Viviana Maggiolini for Pavimenti Sansone, is a series of basic washbasins in concrete, a traditional Sicilian material. They are handcrafted and even their colors are traditional of Sicily, with the bronze, plum and blue of Sicilian beaches. Concrete is made of fine sands and powders of marble and quartz, with resins and pigments with very high stability. Their production takes place without fumes and with a very low residue of waste, which are in good part reused.
Outdoor sauna by aledolci&co. for Starpool. Designed to blend into the environment: the natural oxidation of the coating materials allows the sauna to blend into the landscape. Its structure is made of Val di Fiemme spruce, black waxed and light heat-treated; the entrance compass is coated in burnished copper. Both the main facade and the entrance door are made of glass, while the roof is made of sheet metal. Wood is coated and painted with natural-based oils, which do not release toxic elements at high temperatures.
Design Holding booth at Salone del Mobile 2019. A 4,000 sqm exhibition space designed for three companies (Flos, B&B Italia and Louis Poulsen) in three distinct areas, with a single central entrance.
