Designed by Populous, the new Riyadh stadium aims to become an architectural masterpiece and a versatile hub for sports and recreational events
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City and the Ministry of Sport have recently unveiled the King Salman Stadium project, designed by Populous. Set to become the largest stadium in Saudi Arabia and one of the most significant sports venues worldwide, the project is slated for completion in 2029. It aims to transform the capital into a global hub for international sports and entertainment events.
Located north of Riyadh, adjacent to King Abdulaziz Park, the stadium will be part of an ambitious masterplan integrating sports facilities, commercial spaces, and recreational areas. Inspired by Saudi Arabia’s natural landscape, every element of the project reflects the concept of a “germinating seed,” symbolizing the nation’s commitment to nurturing and growing sports participation across the country, from grassroots to elite levels.
King Salman Stadium Project
The King Salman Stadium will boast a seating capacity of over 92,000, featuring exclusive amenities such as a royal box, skyboxes and lounges, 300 VVIP seats, and 2,200 VIP seats. The access areas are designed to accommodate large crowds efficiently, ensuring an inclusive and barrier-free experience for all. Additionally, a rooftop walkway will provide panoramic views of the adjacent park, highlighting the seamless harmony between architecture and nature.
In addition to the stadium, the masterplan design includes commercial facilities, training football fields, an aquatic center with an Olympic-sized pool, and an athletics stadium. The development will also feature an indoor sports arena and a dedicated sports park for volleyball, basketball, and padel. A 9-kilometer-long sports track will connect these facilities to King Abdulaziz Park, fostering physical activity and social interaction within a cohesive environment.
A Sustainable and Inclusive Project
This exciting new architecture seamlessly integrates sustainability and urban design through advanced construction practices, including green roofs and walls that blend harmoniously with the landscape. The concept aims to create spaces that remain vibrant beyond event days, transforming access walkways into dynamic areas for daily activities and entertainment.
Thanks to projects like the King Salman Stadium and other prominent sports facilities, Saudi Arabia is preparing to host internationally significant events. This milestone is made possible by Populous’s architectural vision, which blends innovation and tradition, supporting the development of the country’s sports and cultural ecosystem.
