Finnish Design for Sustainable Education

In Rome, a talk with Helka Parkkinen on the role of design in learning projects

Sustainable design applied to education and learning is the central theme of the talk with Helka Parkkinen, founding partner of the Helsinki-based studio KOKO3. The event will take place on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Rinascente Roma – Via del Tritone.

Promoted by the Embassy of Finland and curated by Arianna Callocchia, the event highlights Finland’s commitment to promoting sustainable design in educational spaces—an approach that combines functionality, well-being, and environmental responsibility.

An Event Dedicated to Finnish Values

The talk is part of the initiatives celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Moomin stories, a symbolic celebration of Finnish culture.

Finland is known for the quality of its education system and for values such as equality, trust, solidarity, sustainability, and love for nature. These ideals are also reflected in the famous characters created by Tove Jansson, author and illustrator of the Moomin universe. The Moomins embody Finnish happiness and the importance of design as a tool to improve everyday life.

In Finland, design contributes to collective well-being and the creation of spaces that foster learning, social interaction, and sustainability for future generations.

The Speakers of the Talk

Following greetings from Matti Lassila, Ambassador of Finland to Italy, and Tommaso Salvatori, Director of ISIA Roma Design, Helka Parkkinen will present a selection of sustainable interior design projects dedicated to education and learning.

The discussion will be moderated by Alessandra Bertini Malgarini from ISIA Roma Design, aiming to explore new frontiers in educational design.

Sustainable Interior Design Projects for Schools and Universities

During the talk, Helka Parkkinen will showcase projects developed by KOKO3, a Finnish studio specializing in educational and public spaces.

Each project integrates flexible and inclusive design solutions:

  • Multifunctional and modular spaces that encourage collaboration
  • Local and recycled materials to reduce environmental impact
  • Circular economy and energy-saving principles
  • Smart technologies and innovative solutions to enhance comfort and efficiency

The goal is to create sustainable learning environments that adapt to the diverse needs of students, teachers, and staff, promoting well-being and respect for the environment.

Partners and Collaborations

The talk, promoted by the Embassy of Finland and curated by Arianna Callocchia, is part of the 2025 Nordic November Festival. The initiative is organized in collaboration with Rinascente Roma – Via del Tritone and with the patronage of ISIA Roma Design.
