“Where ideas meet” is the theme of the Japanese Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. The project by Yuko Nagayama & Associates uses architecture to emphasize the cultural affinities between Japan and the Middle East. The 3D facade grid is intended to highlight the commonalities between traditional Japanese and Arab models. Since ancient times, Japan has welcomed and reinterpreted concepts and models from all over the world to create something new and uniquely Japanese. Therefore, the architectural project is based on two types of connections between Japan and the Middle East: the cultural and the technological connection.

Tradition and technology in the Japanese Pavilion

The cultural connection is represented by an original exterior façade where traditional Middle Eastern Arabesque geometric patterns are combined with Japanese Asanoha patterns. The resulting 3D geometric grid acts as a structure and environmental filter. A material that reproduces traditional origami shapes has two functions: on the one hand, it easily lends itself to reproducing the shapes of origata gift wrapping; on the other, it protects the pavilion from direct sunlight.

Yuko Nagayama has applied current technologies to traditional concepts also to cool the pavilion. A shallow water pool placed before the entrance to the pavilion refreshes the area and reflects the façade in a three-dimensional mirror; the architect has applied technologies from the Middle Eastern tradition to a contemporary building. The project relies on natural cooling systems incorporating traditional Arab and Japanese techniques also for the indoor areas of the pavilion. [Txt: Arianna Callocchia]
