After a year of forced pause, Design Miami/Basel returns for its 15th edition, with a rich design program
From September 21-26, 2021, Basel’s Messeplatz will host 27 international galleries and 14 special exhibitions from the Curio program. The Design at Large section will take on a new look, featuring large-scale works and installations. The 2021 edition also introduces hybrid physical/digital format for the event, first unveiled in Miami in 2020. This hybrid format will allow collectors to view and purchase works from the show directly online. It will also be possible to participate in virtual tours, lectures and more.
For the 2021 edition, Design Miami/Basel is collaborating with Superblue, the new art exhibition format curated by Pace Gallery. Together, Design Miami/Basel and Superblue will present Shylights, a work by DRIFT. The Dutch artist duo formed by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta have designed a poetic upside-down forest of moving flowers for the Event Hall to reconnect with nature. The installation will be accompanied by a series of complementary activities for a fully immersive experience.

The fair of collectible design
Design Miami/Basel welcomes six new galleries to the fair in September, including AGO Projects, Geoffrey Diner Gallery, Morentz, and Hemmerle alongside founding galleries Galerie kreo, Galerie Patrick Seguin, Jousse Entreprise, and LAFFANOUR-Galerie Downtown.
Geneva-based Bailly Gallery explores the relationship between artists and designers from the 1930s through WW2 and beyond. Therefore, the gallery will present Madoura ceramics by Picasso along with art objects and furniture by Diego and Alberto Giacometti.
Angela Weber Möbel gallery will debut with works by masters such as Gio Ponti, Osvaldo Borsani, Oscar Nilsson, Axel Einar, and Paul Laszlo. These works coming from Italy, Sweden, Finland and the United States include crafted furniture, lighting and ceramic pieces.
At Geoffrey Diner Gallery, the Reception House table and chairs by George Nakashima will take center place in the booth. The table for the Reception House, or Sanso Villa, the last building designed by George Nakashima on his property, can be considered as the forerunner of the Altars for Peace later built by Nakashima.
The contemporary works unveiled at Design Miami/Basel will include The Black Hole Mirror by Atelier Van Asseldonk at French gallery Galerie SCENE OUVERTE. This new piece commissioned especially for the fair has taken over seven months to realize and is crafted from over 600 individual pieces of mirror that capture and reflect the light in different ways.
At Etage Projects, select new works by contemporary designers including FOS and Sabine Marcelis will be unveiled. The gallery will also bring new works by bahraini—danish, the design collective established in Bahrain in 2016 by architects Batool Alshaikh, Maitham Almubarak, and Christian Vennerstrøm Jensen.

In addition to the gallery program, Design Miami/Basel presents Curio, the exhibition platform that invites designers, architects, curators and gallery owners to present entire environments in which objects, furniture and textures contextualize design narratives. Curio, with its 14 galleries, represents a snapshot of today’s design, alternating with galleries.

For the first time, design collectors visiting Design Miami/Basel will also be able to buy pieces online from DM/BX, the recently launched online shop featuring one-of-a-kind pieces, limited-edition designs and newly released works by celebrated and emerging designers. DM/BX provides a fresh and more affordable take on collectible design for new collectors. DM/BX will have a stand with works by Laura Sattin, Diego Faivre, and XTANT among others. Technology will help with purchases thanks to virtual tours of the fair, curated by Matterport.
