Rubelli for Bvlgari: the enchantment of authentic textile masterpieces

The textile reproductions of works by two contemporary artists: Alessandro Florio and Zach Lieberman

Rubelli confirms its role as textile partner of Bvlgari for the extraordinary launch event of “Polychroma”, the new High Jewelry collection by the Maison, unveiled in May in Taormina. As was the case for the “Mediterranea” collection – presented by Bvlgari in May 2023 in the halls of Palazzo Soranzo Van Axel in Venice with a memorable brand event – Rubelli also supplied various fabrics for “Polychroma”, both from its collection and custom-designed.

The precious Bvlgari creations – showcased in a striking runway show at the magnificent Greek Theatre of Taormina – were temporarily exhibited within the prestigious San Domenico Palace hotel, whose interiors have long been adorned with fabrics by the Venetian Maison.

Here, adding to the atmosphere of the event and “parading” through the hotel’s grand halls, were also the tapestries specially created by Rubelli for the occasion. These are textile reproductions of works by two very different contemporary artists: Alessandro Florio, a Sicilian painter (originally from Taormina!), and Zach Lieberman, an American visual artist and designer.

Color and references to Bvlgari collections

While Florio’s paintings feature fairytale-like animals set in landscapes rich in Sicilian symbolism, Lieberman’s artistic production emerges from a highly original and poetic use of technology, forming the basis of his animated and interactive creations.

In both artists’ works, it is color that dominates and enchants—instantly evoking the creations of Bvlgari displayed in the temporary exhibition cases. Indeed, the very name of the collection, Polychroma, calls to mind the variety and richness of color which, through its many shades, becomes a universal language when expressed in gemstones.

The tapestries, developed at Rubelli’s Venetian headquarters and produced at its weaving mill in Cucciago (Como), masterfully reproduce the chromatic vibrancy and kaleidoscopic dimension of the two artists’ works. Made with different weaves and fiber compositions, the tapestries are the result of the skill and craftsmanship of Rubelli’s designers and technicians, who successfully translated the two artists’ visions into authentic textile artworks.

For many years, Rubelli has collaborated with Bvlgari on hospitality projects (such as the Bvlgari Hotel in Rome) and store planning, providing both collection and custom fabrics.

The Polychroma project, decidedly complex, offered Rubelli yet another opportunity to engage with the world of art—further expanding its portfolio of “artistic” collaborations, which dates back to the 1930s when it worked with iconic artists such as Gio Ponti, Guido Cadorin, Vittorio Zecchin, and many others. Today, unlike in the past, Rubelli continues this dialogue using cutting-edge techniques, in a unique fusion of art, craftsmanship, and textile technology.
