Women and contemporary architecture in Finland: an online conference promoted by the Foundation of the Chamber of Architects of the Province of Milan

The Contribution of Women in Contemporary Architecture: The Finnish Example” is the second of the two online conferences hosted in the digital room of the Foundation of the Chamber of Architects of the Province of Milan. This conference, which follows the one dedicated to Switzerland, will be held on 15th October 2020 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The initiative belongs to the architectural evenings promoted by the Foundation of the Chamber of Architects of the Province of Milan, which, since its creation in 1998, has promoted a lively cultural activity.

The cultural activity of the Chamber of Architects of the Province of Milan includes evenings of debate, architectural itineraries, publications, awards, exhibitions, and is a reference for professionals and architecture enthusiasts in Milan.

The goal of this event, curated by architect Arianna Callocchia, is to highlight the role and the importance of women in architecture, creating an opportunity for comparison, professional exchange and constructive dialogue between Italian and international realities. During the conference, the designers will illustrate some works recently completed in Finland to present their approach and their design philosophy in contemporary architecture as to environmental sustainability, technological innovation, building redevelopment, the relationship with the historical, cultural and urban context in which we live.

After the keynote speech by Marialisa Santi, Consul Chamber of Architects of the Province of Milan, and Pia Rantala-Engberg, Ambassador of Finland to Italy, the conference will go on with speeches by Riina Palva, SAFA architect, Verstas Architects Ltd, Helsinki, and Selina Anttinen, SAFA architect, AOA Anttinen Oiva Architects Ltd, Helsinki, moderated by Maria Vittoria Capitanucci, architectural historian, Politecnico di Milano. Riina Palva will illustrate the project of the Väre Building at the Aalto University in the Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland, built next to the main building designed by Alvar and Elissa Aalto in 1960. Selina Anttinen will present Wood City, a new project for a sustainable city in Helsinki, including apartments, hotels and offices, plus parking spaces, and the project of the new carbon-neutral timber structure Katajanokan Laituri in Helsinki.

This conference is organized in cooperation with ATL – The Association of Finnish Architects’ Offices and with the patronage of the Embassy of Finland in Italy, SAFA – Finnish Association of Architects, Archinfo Finland – Architecture Information Centre Finland, Chamber of Architects of the Province of Milan, Italian Council of Architects. The initiative is organized with the support of Garofoli, an Italian company established by Ferdinando Garofoli in 1968 and currently a world leader in the design, construction and sale of doors, particularly specialized in solid wood doors.
