This year, the leading nautical show in the Mediterranean area presented itself with a revamped layout, looking ahead to the complete renovation of the Levante Waterfront, redesigned by Architect Renzo Piano. “The yachting industry is proudly flying the Made in Italy flag with a 360° view,” commented Marina Stella, General Director of Confindustria Nautica, “an aspect we honor with the Design Innovation Awards.” Moreover, the Genoa Boat Show is not only a place for trade. Starting this year, the Show has embarked on a path of sustainability, which begins today with the measurement of the event’s carbon footprint, in order to plan the most effective actions to reduce the environmental footprint to zero.

The yachting industry is on the upswing

Figures show that the Italian yachting industry enjoys excellent health. The sector’s overall turnover rose from 4.6 billion in 2020 to an impressive 6.1 billion in 2021. The increase compared to the previous year was +31.1%: an extraordinary figure that does not only compensate for the slight drop recorded in 2020 but also brings the sector’s turnover to almost the same level as during the record two-year period of 2007-2008.

Among the decisive factors fueling this growth is export of shipbuilding production, which in the sliding year ending March 2022 reached an all-time high of 3.37 billion euros, with the USA as the leading market for our yards. Other determining factors are the order books of Italian yacht and superyacht yards, which for many operators even cover the next three years, and the excellent performance of the boating accessories and engines sectors.

Design Innovation Award 2022

Also in 2022 the Genoa International Boat Show handed out the Design Innovation Awards established by the Confindustria Nautica and I Saloni Nautici. The aim of the awards is to support excellence across the yachting industry by promoting visibility of exhibitors through their latest products.
