The Architecture of “Just Enough”: BIG SEE Festival 2026 in Portorož

A timely reflection on boundaries, professional responsibility, and the true meaning of design in today’s world

In a landscape completely saturated with images, products, and non-stop stimuli, the design world is hitting the pause button to ask a radical question: “Too much? What is just enough?” This is the beating heart of the BIG SEE Festival 2026, Southeast Europe’s leading platform for architecture and product design, which is back to bring together creative minds and international decision-makers on the beautiful Adriatic coast.

On May 21 and 22, 2026, the historic Grando in Portorož (Slovenia) will host the event. Previously known under the separate banners of BIG Architecture and BIG Design, the festival returns as a unified platform to highlight a brand-new ambition: transforming architecture and design into critical, real-world tools to navigate the complexity of global change.

BIG SEE Festival 2026

Designing with measure: “Too much? What is just enough?”

We are living in an era of unprecedented abundance. While technical limitations have practically vanished and “everything is possible,” the BIG SEE Festival 2026 shifts the spotlight to the ethics behind our choices. The challenge is no longer about figuring out whether something can be built, but whether it should be.

Architecture and design do not exist to feed excess; they are meant to bring order to chaos and dignity to space. Embracing restraint and subtraction isn’t a limit on creativity—it is a profound act of professional and environmental responsibility.

The three core pillars of the festival

The BIG SEE Festival 2026 is structured into three interconnected levels, designed to offer a complete, 360-degree view of the industry:

  1. The Conference: A space for pause and deep reflection where industry giants (from Renzo Piano Building Workshop to the Norman Foster Foundation) will debate topics like the Great Reduction and urban humanity. This isn’t just a parade of beautiful renderings, but a real conversation on the social relevance of design.
  2. BIG SEE Awards: Far more than mere trophies, these awards recognize works defined by clarity, intention, and substance. They celebrate projects that show original thought deeply rooted in their real-world context.
  3. The Trade Show: A highly curated exhibition for architects and designers searching for practical innovation. Over 100 handpicked exhibitors will showcase the materials and technologies that professionals actually need to build tomorrow.

A global community gathering in Portorož

With over 3,000 visitors arriving from 21 countries and more than 800 live networking moments, the BIG SEE Festival 2026 creates a dense, inspiring, and collaborative environment. This year’s stellar lineup of speakers includes prestigious studios like Mecanoo, Groupwork (Amin Taha), BAX Studio, and Rintala Eggertsson Architects—all ready to challenge purely aesthetic standards in favor of architecture that serves human life, not just an Instagram feed.

Join the movement: The International Survey

In the run-up to the event, the festival organizers have launched a global survey targeting creatives and professionals to explore what “just enough” truly means in 2026. By taking part in the survey at bigsee.eu, professionals can claim a free ticket to the festival and get the chance to have their insights published or debated during the live sessions.

Why you can’t miss it

The BIG SEE Festival 2026 is more than just another industry event; it is an act of collective discernment. In a world that constantly shouts, design must learn to whisper the essentials. If you are looking for real answers regarding long-term sustainability, ethical responsibility, and the true impact of architecture, Portorož is exactly where you need to be this May.
