The Fluid Design Revolution: The Success of LYMPHA at Fuorisalone

Sherwin-Williams, ICA, and Sayerlack transformed surfaces into sensory experiences at Milano Design Week 2026: an analysis of the project merging material and color innovation

Color is not just an aesthetic coating; it is a vital force capable of redefining spaces and materials. This was clearly demonstrated by LYMPHA, the exhibition project presented by Sherwin-Williams alongside its brands ICA and Sayerlack at Fuorisalone 2026. The installation shattered traditional concepts of finishing, leaving a profound mark on the Milano Design Week audience.

Hosted inside the Oasi Life Experience against the backdrop of Piazza Città di Lombardia, the event achieved massive critical and public acclaim. The showcase confirmed how chromatic innovation can transform wood from a simple substrate into a living organism, thanks to a deep, continuous, and vibrant visual flow.

Color as a Vital Force: Materials Animated from Within

The core concept of LYMPHA was precise: color flows through the material rather than merely covering it. The designers drew inspiration from plant sap (linfa in Italian)—the invisible element that flows and generates life. In this way, industrial wood coating became an expressive medium, imparting movement, depth, and texture to the surfaces.

Thanks to this vision, wood finishing has evolved beyond its traditional protective function to become a central element of the design process. The lacquers and stains penetrated the natural grain, amplifying the wood knots and transforming every piece of furniture on display into a dynamic object.

A Wooden Botanical Garden: The Future of Coating Technologies

The exhibition welcomed visitors into a true chromatic garden. Within this sensory space, color innovation shaped a powerful emotional architecture. Designer Linda Marchetti (from LeFOU studio) created large-scale wooden floral installations. These botanical sculptures translated the concept of vital sap into geometric, three-dimensional forms.

The path unfolded across three main botanical elements, where each brand interpreted a specific flower to showcase its latest technologies:

  • Dahlia (Sherwin-Williams): Expressed the elegance and resilience of the material.
  • Poppy (ICA): Represented spontaneous creativity and the vital power of color.
  • Ginkgo Biloba (Sayerlack): Embodied the concepts of memory, longevity, and regeneration.

These flowers were not mere scenic decorations, but actual exhibition features. Through wooden petals and stems, the three brands unveiled pioneering textures, matte or glossy effects, and cutting-edge product combinations.

Finishes as a Design Tool: Sustainability and Performance

LYMPHA has radically changed the industrial role of coatings. Chemical products have left the purely technical sphere to become strategic tools in the hands of contemporary designers. The surfaces presented in Milan engaged in a dialogue with the environment, creating emotional connections with people.

Today, R&D centers work to merge three key factors: environmental sustainability, high technical performance, and visual beauty. Chromatic innovation is driving this shift in the coatings industry, moving the focus from the single product to the global creative process.

An Invitation to Slow Down: A Tactile Oasis in the Heart of Milan

The creators conceived the installation as an explicit invitation to slow down. The typical frenzy of Milano Design Week found a natural antidote in this tactile journey. Throughout the event, visitors were able to touch the surfaces, observe the details, and perceive the subtle shifts of tone under the light.

In a market increasingly demanding well-being, sustainability, and authentic brand identity, LYMPHA brought a frequently invisible element like coating to the forefront. The finish is no longer a final treatment, but the very material coming to life. Color has ceased to be a superficial application, transforming instead into pure visual energy.
