The lamps designed by John Pawson for St. John’s Church in Hackney feature Murano glass
Wonderglass, a London-based company with an Italian soul, is celebrating its first collaboration with John Pawson with an exhibition of Murano glass lamps, designed by Pawson himself for the refurbishment of St. John’s Church in Hackney, London.
WonderGlass, founded in 2012 by Maurizio and Christian Mussati, uses glass in different finishes for all its lamps, designed by the most famous and successful designers in the world.
At the London Design Festival 2019, WonderGlass will be exhibiting lamps from the Sleeve collection. The work sets one handmade glass cylinder within another, with the outer cylinder flaring into a refined disc lip at its lower edge. The lamp casts light downwards, with the clear body glowing along its entire length.
Designing lights for John Pawson is a challenge. His architecture relies on pure, empty spaces, a tribute to extreme essentiality. The Sleeve lamp thus becomes a way to interpret the void, with the light turning solid and the object disappearing, and only appearing when it spreads the light.[Roberta Mutti]
