In Helsinki, a building from the ’70s becomes a contemporary multi-purpose center
A former administration building of the Helsinki University has been transformed into a ‘Think Corner’, an authentic thought factory offering students, teachers, entrepreneurs and professionals a new public space for conferences, meetings, debates and events. The project carried out by Finnish firm JKMM Architects renovates and transforms the original building from 1977, built by architect Toivo Korhonen, giving the site a contemporary touch.

The entrance is characterized by a large glazed wall and a wood clad staircase that invites people in, building a strong connection between exterior and interior spaces. Inside, visitors are welcomed in a double-height hall covered in raw concrete and illuminated from above by large trapezoidal skylights entirely covered in wood.
All the floors, both those dedicated to events and those hosting the offices and services of the ‘Think Corner’, are connected by a large wooden staircase that links all the spaces. This public thinking space joins the several new buildings in Helsinki. [Text Arianna Callocchia – Photo Tuomas Uusheimo / JKMM Architects]
