The Rope Chair, a project by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, combines art and technology, in line with Artek’s traditional values
Since its origins, Artek, the Finnish company established by Alvar and Aino Aalto in 1935, has been producing furnishings that combine art and technology, true to the Bauhaus culture. Also in 2020, Artek renews this tradition with the Rope chair.
A twisted rope traces a mark in space and forms a chair that is both solid and flexible, thanks to its steel tube frame. The rope defines the soft backrest and armrests, which adapt to the shape of the person sitting on the chair.
Its seat is made of pressed beech plywood and ash veneer, available in black or light grey, just like the frame. The rope is available in black or natural.
The Rope Chair is the ideal continuation of the philosophy of Artek, which was born in 1935 to spread Alvar and Aino Aalto’s design, a duo of architects and designers who left a permanent mark in the history of design. Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec continue in this way their research into poetic lightness, which they manage to combine in products characterized by contemporary technology.
