Post-Covid-19 recovery and collective health are the themes of the 2021 edition of London Design Biennale
Originally planned for 2020, due to the pandemic it was postponed by a year. Curated by Es Devlin, London Design Biennale 2021 focuses on four highly topical macro-themes.
- Environment: how can we design better places?
- Health: how can design make it easier to be healthy?
- Society: how can design empower everyone?
- Work: how can work be designed to be meaningful?
London Design Biennale 2021, Design in an Age of Crisis, will welcome 500 projects from 50 countries across 6 continents.
The London Design Biennale 2021 exhibition will be held as usual at Somerset House. The partnership between the Biennale and Chatham House has led to the creation of a platform that has called the 500 participants through a collective search.
Environmental and health sustainability to feel better
Many of the submitted projects reflect the ingenuity that is triggered in times of crisis: the climate change crisis is widely addressed, and, as countries around the world look ahead to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November, proposals focus on the desire to rebalance our relationship with nature. Proposals address the issues of urban sustainability, the use of public space and the built environment, green spaces.

A new green utopia
“Forest for Change” is the centerpiece of the 2021 edition of London Design Biennale. A forest of 400 trees belonging to 23 varieties typical of the UK and Northern Europe will create a green landscape in the courtyard of Somerset House. The pavilion will offer a journey of discovery and interaction, with a Global Goals installation in the forest’s central clearing.
The forest will gather voices from across society to create a collective message for change in an effort to fight climate change, reduce inequality, and include everyone in the post-Covid-19 recovery. Designed by Es Devlin, internationally renowned artist and designer as well as artistic director of the Biennale, in collaboration with landscape designer Philip Jaffa and urban greening specialists Scotscape, the outdoor experience is presented in partnership with Project Everyone, a not-for-profit agency founded by Richard Curtis, Kate Garvey and Gail Gallie to further awareness and engagement with Global Goals.
