The 14 cabins making up Hotel 48° Nord in Breitenbach, Alsace, offer their guests an ecotourism experience
In Italy, we would call it a “rifugio”; in Norway or Scandinavia, the word “hytte” designates a small, humble and austere hut in the mountains, by the sea or in the woods. The project for Hotel 48° Nord was the result of the encounter between two cultures (Alsace and Scandinavia), two passions (nature and architecture) and two men (Emil Leroy and Reiulf Ramstad), with the support of the enthusiastic and very supportive local community of the village of Breitenbach.
Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter firm, in collaboration with ASP Architecture, has designed the hotel complex including 14 small buildings and the main building housing the common services and the restaurant. The 14 small buildings are made with locally-sourced untreated chestnut wood from Alsace. They are lightweight and can be completely dismantled to leave the ground untouched.

The hotel includes four families of cabins: Grass, grouped near the main building, which houses the common services and the restaurant offering products from their vegetable garden; Tree and Ivy, taller and slender, combine verticality and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape; lastly, Fjell cabins, on the top of the hill, with their sheltered outdoor spaces, are perfect for families.
The interiors of this lodge hotel are minimalist and rustic, with a prevalence of light-colored wood, comfortable built-in furniture.
