Architecture as Living Spectacle: Lina Ghotmeh Designs the Courtyard of Honor at Palazzo Litta

“Metamorphosis in Motion” is the heart of MoscaPartners Variations for Milano Design Week 2026

The boundary between monument and movement dissolves. On the occasion of Salone del Mobile 2026, Palazzo Litta returns as the epicenter of Milanese experimentation with MoscaPartners Variations. This year’s scenographic centerpiece is entrusted to Lina Ghotmeh, the internationally renowned architect who, through her first outdoor site-specific work in Italy, transforms the iconic Courtyard of Honor into a pulsating ecosystem. The installation, titled Metamorphosis in Motion, is not merely a work to be admired but a manifesto of metamorphic design that places the human being at the center of a spatial process in constant evolution.

Archaeology of the Future: Lina Ghotmeh’s Labyrinth

Following her celebrated “Archaeology of the Future” approach, Lina Ghotmeh has conceived an intervention that intertwines the historical memory of the Lombard Baroque palace with the urgencies of contemporary living. The courtyard, historically a place of representation and a ceremonial threshold, is reinterpreted as a dynamic architectural device.

Metamorphosis in Motion presents itself as a playful labyrinth that choreographs the visitors’ movement. Through curved geometries and shifting perspectives, the installation invites a silent pause amidst the roar of Design Week. “Metamorphosis emerges through use,” Ghotmeh explains, “and the courtyard evolves from a threshold to a common good.” This approach transforms static space into a lived metamorphic design, where the visitor’s body becomes an integral part of the architectural composition.

Beyond the Object: The Exhibition Path on the Piano Nobile

The energy generated in the Courtyard of Honor propagates through the rooms of the piano nobile, where the curation by Caterina Mosca and Valerio Castelli showcases a selection of top-tier designers and companies. The theme of transformation links Ghotmeh’s work to the exhibitors’ proposals, creating a bridge between urban regeneration and material innovation.

Key highlights of this edition include:

  • Innovation and Matter: from the Mutant Materials by Poliuretano-è to NABA’s study on aluminum in collaboration with CIAL.
  • Contemporary Aesthetics: brands such as Adrenalina, MV Line (with the Sunflower project by Giulio Iacchetti), and Vetralia explore new formal languages.
  • International Research: presence from Japan (Nychair X, Mitsubishi Chemical), South Korea, and Belgium underscores the global identity of the showcase.

Each exhibitor contributes to a collective narrative that looks beyond the individual product to embrace a more conscious world, deeply connected to the planet’s resources.

Palazzo Litta: A Laboratory for Future Scenarios

Since 2014, MoscaPartners has transformed this jewel on Corso Magenta into a laboratory for critical design. In 2026, the exhibition confirms its mission: using design as a tool to interpret the complexity of our time.

Metamorphic design thus becomes the lens through which to explore the transition from the single object to the collective ecosystem. Metamorphosis in Motion reminds us that architecture is not an immutable frame, but a living process of adaptation and participation.
