Temporary architecture: Casa Dendê Duratex, from Casacor Sao Paulo 2019

Architect Nildo José completed his first full house project in Casacor Sao Paulo 2019. A residence of 155 square meters, consisting of a large living room facing the garden, a dining area, a bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchen. The project combines many original solutions, mixing essential and very sophisticated elegance with authentically Brazilian elements, taken from the architecture of Bahia, the author’s birthplace.

Casa Dendê Duratex (House Dendê Duratex) – that’ s the name of the project – is a variation of different white, a color that visually amplifies the space, and allows you to interact with the sunlight, so strong in the tropical latitude, to become a founding element of every architectural project.

Duratex, a Brazilian company specialising in melamine, laminate and MDF panels, supplied many of the covering materials, including movable lattice walls containing the bathroom and kitchen.

Bathroom and kitchen appear and disappear

Bathroom and kitchen are some of the most interesting features of the project, being both located in a sort of ‘box’, with movable walls that can be folded up like a book.

The walls consist of melamine panels composing a large white lattice, allowing light and air to pass through even when closed, to hide the technical areas of the bathroom and kitchen.

The same latticework cuts out a large rectangle in the ceiling, above a skylight, to get air and natural light, precious elements for the microclimate at the latitude of the Tropics.

The natural stone flooring is the ideal complement to the large windows facing the garden of the “Espadas de São Jorge” – designed by Bia Abreu, and fill the living room with light, leading to a dining area, or Gourmet Island, inspired by the interiors of French architect Joseph Dirand.

The dark wood wall and ceiling cladding are inspired by the Jacaranda wood, a typical Bahia tree; the other contrasting light-colored coverings are also inspired by the beach huts.

Vintage and contemporary furnishings

The furniture is made up of design classics and contemporary products. The living room houses a Bowl armchair, designed by Lina Bo Bardi in a single prototype in the fifties, and produced for the first time by Arper in 2012.

Next to it, again in the living room, two Zanine Caldas armchairs and white wall lamps by Bernard Schottlander, also from the 1950s. In the dining area, easy chair Dinamarquesa by Jorge Zalszupin; in the bathroom and the kitchen, white taps by Deca complete the elegant and essential atmosphere.
