Milan Design Week 2022: Tortona and surroundings

All-round design for the seventh edition of Tortona Rocks, the Fuorisalone event in the Tortona area

Tortona Rocks brings innovative design to the stage of the Fuorisalone 2022, with more than 20 international exhibitions. From the monumental installation by IQOS to the innovation of the German Design Council, from the Slovenian Centre for Creativity (CzK) to the superior lighting design by Stilnovo, and much more.

A highlight of the 2022 edition is the installation presented by IQOS, a large-scale temporary site-specific intervention that continues the evolutionary journey between art and technology. IQOS practically illustrates the potential of Airlite paint to reduce pollutants in the air with an installation curated by Truly Design Crew. The work consists of several surfaces, which create a large image representing a community of people, each with their uniqueness and story to tell.

Milan Design Week and Tortona: a continuing story

The events and projects in the Tortona Rocks schedule take place in the Tortona district at Opificio 31 and on Via Tortona, Via Privata Gaspare Bugatti, Via Savona and Via Bergognone. Opificio 31 will showcase several projects; for example, the German Design Council will present the winning projects of the international ein&zwanzig competition, including alternative techniques and new sustainable materials. The Slovenian Center for Creativity (CzK) will showcase a collective exhibition of designers offering a different perspective on manufacturing. Stilnovo’s iconic products, on the other hand, will be the stars of the Stilnovo Original Lounge concept, while the future of housing will return to Archiproducts Milano with Future Habit(at).

Connective Nature by Finsa will offer a reflection on people’s relationship with nature and the role of public spaces as social connectors; Vento by Consorzio San Daniele, on the other hand, will guide the visitors through an experiential journey highlighting the role of the natural and primal elements of the land where a product of excellence such as Prosciutto San Daniele is born.

Recycling and new lifestyles

Opificio 31 will feature the Waste/Less initiative, proposed by Milano Space Makers, which organizes Tortona Rocks every year. The initiative, realized in collaboration with AMSA, shows the potential of a virtuous transformation process of waste materials.

The protagonist at Via Savona 35 will be THE PLAYFUL LIVING, which, in collaboration with Sfera MediaGroup, presents A Casa Ovunque, an event that invites us to reflect on how our lifestyles are changing and how homes are adapting to it.

The theme of Tortona Design Week, which returns again this year from June 6 to 12, is Fluidity and Design. Design becomes an essential factor of cultural transformation, sensitive to social changes. Among the participants in Tortona Design Week, we find Timberland, IKEA, Lexus, Saviola, Apima, Delta Light, Candy, Hoover, Haier, gloTM, Decor Lab, Capital Collection, Lechler – ColorDesign, Mia Forniture, Zip Zone, Materioteca, Officina 14.

Among the projects of Tortona Design Week 2022, in the roundabout on Via Bergognone, Urbo.Style, which creates street furniture, and Linea Light Group, which provides lighting fixtures, are the partners of the project designed by Domus Academy students for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics. The name of the project is The Roundabout – Design with Nature; the furniture, made by Urbo.Style is made of tubular metal, in gold, silver and bronze, like medals, while Linea Light Group will illuminate the roundabout with two lighting design solutions: Thin66, a linear element inserted into the underside of the seats, and Lira Pole, a custom lighting pole that completely revolutionizes the obsolete concept of “street lamp”.
