Bridges of Light and Matter: Saudi Design Conquers Palazzo Brera

Jusoor Design Collections Debuts at Milan Design Week 2026: A Boundless Dialogue Between the Kingdom’s New Talents and International High Craftsmanship

Within the solemn setting of the Istituto Lombardo, inside the Sala delle Adunanze of Palazzo Brera, contemporary design finds a new, vibrant voice. The Architecture & Design Commission of the Saudi Ministry of Culture presents Jusoor Design Collections, an ambitious program marking the international debut of a generation of creatives capable of blending desert aesthetics with the technologies of the future.

Curated by Samer Yamani, the exhibition is not merely a display of objects, but a philosophical manifesto. “Jusoor,” which means “bridges” in Arabic, celebrates the connection between Riyadh, New Delhi, Kathmandu, and Barcelona, demonstrating how design can become a universal language of cultural exchange and manufacturing innovation.

An Aesthetic of Resilience: Glass, Metal, and Sand

The works presented in the Jusoor Design Collections reflect a deep material research that challenges tradition. Among the most iconic pieces is Thanoon, a sculptural lamp born from the collaboration between speculative architect Muotaz Abbas and Klove Studio. Inspired by the Cistanche desert plant, the work translates organic growth into glass and metal geometries featuring warm amber tones.

In parallel, the TAKWEEN lamp series by Aseel Alamoudi plays on the brutal yet poetic contrast between raw sandstone and stainless steel. Here, light acts as the glue between the ancestral element of the Saudi land and the precision of contemporary industry, creating unique pieces that tell the story of an identity in constant evolution.

Nature and Memory: From Corals to the Spiral of Knowledge

The biodiversity of the Red Sea enters the spaces of Brera through the CORA Collection. Designers Abeer AlRabiah and Albandari Sulaiman, together with Iwan Maktabi, have transformed precious hand-woven carpets into twelve sculptural seats. These three-dimensional stools replicate the rhythm and fragility of coral colonies, with “bleached” pieces serving as a silent warning about the crisis of marine ecosystems.

The intellectual inquiry continues with the TAH bookshelf, designed by Saud Alsaleh in collaboration with Lagranja Design. Crafted from metal in a spiral shape, the work explores the non-linear perception of language linked to the designer’s personal experience with dyslexia. The spiral thus becomes a symbol of persistence and growth, where the book is not just archived but embraced in a continuous flow of memory and thought.

The New Saudi Design Renaissance

The presentation of the Jusoor Design Collections in Milan marks a fundamental milestone for the Architecture & Design Commission. By placing five emerging talents (Abbas, Alamoudi, AlRabiah, Sulaiman, Alsaleh) in direct collaboration with global brands such as Klove Studio and Lagranja Design, the program proves that cultural specificity can generate new perspectives when fueled by international dialogue.

More than a collection of finished objects, Jusoor showcases the process: shared workshops and experimentation with materials become the heart of a conscious, collaborative design, deeply rooted in an ecological and narrative sensibility that looks toward tomorrow with boldness.
