Since 2009 W-Eye has been producing hingeless glasses in wood and aluminum
The story of W-Eye, the hingeless glasses in wood and aluminum, began in 2009 as a brainchild of Doriano Mattellone. Mattellone took the helm of his family’s carpenter’s shop in 1978, immediately approaching the design industry. In 1984 Mattellone carpenter’s shop started providing several design brands, including Alias, Poltrona Frau, Vitra, Accademia, Tonon, Fornasarig, with semi-finished products.

Mold after mold, in 2009, Mattellone met Matteo Ragni, and they decided to create a brand dedicated to wooden glasses. Matteo Ragni, art director of this brand, involved ten designers – Antonio De Marco, Odoardo Fioravanti, Diego Grandi, Giulio Iacchetti, JoeVelluto, Chiara Moreschi, Luca Nichetto, Lorenzo Palmeri, Matteo Ragni, Elena Salmistraro – in the creation of the W-Eye Ten – Italian Design Collection.
The result consists in 10 models of eyeglasses, made of a special material made of 7 wood sheets and 2 aluminum sheets. The wood obtained in this way offers the “elastic rigidity” that characterizes these glasses, which, as a consequence, do not need any hinge.
This patented technology makes it possible to have tailor-made glasses that perfectly adapt to one’s face. The absence of the hinge is crucial to keep the glasses perfectly calibrated.
Today W-Eye celebrates its 10th anniversary and has already won several awards, including the Silmo d’Or, the most prestigious award in the eyewear field, and the German Design Award Special.
