Santiago Calatrava designs the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai: it is sustainable and equipped with cutting-edge technology
The Pavilion of the United Arab Emirates, designed by Santiago Calatrava, recalls a falcon in flight. The falcon, which often recurs in Arab culture, is the symbol of the Emirates and is also present on their emblem. Therefore, the Pavilion invites visitors to explore the history and cultural heritage of the Emirates. This Middle Eastern country has preserved its ancient role as a crossroads between East and West, transforming itself into a global hub.
Inspired by traditional Bedouin tents, the UAE pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai occupies an area of 15,000 square meters. Life in the desert offers plenty of inspiration for sustainable solutions, and sustainability is at the heart of the pavilion’s design. For the construction, they used local materials and cutting-edge technologies to save energy, reduce water consumption and optimize indoor air quality.

The sloping roof surfaces and large floating wings of the building create visual connections between exterior and interior, and welcome visitors coming from all directions of the Expo site in an immersive, multi-sensory experience. The surrounding outdoor areas allow for a smooth flow of people into the Pavilion, while strategically aligned bridges lead to the heart of the Expo, Al Wasl Plaza. [Txt: Arianna Callocchia]
