From April 17th to 23rd, Fuorisalone 2023 returns, once again filled with events, installations, and exhibitions scattered throughout Milan. A guide to the Design Districts and routes of Milano Design Week
Brera Design District
To respond to tomorrow’s challenges, design is a valuable tool: in Brera Design District, the most important week for the design world is the stage for ideas and creative and innovative solutions of strong impact. The theme of 2023 is “Future Laboratory”, a moment of experimentation to translate today’s challenges into opportunities for tomorrow. Brera Design Week 2023 will be a lens on the most current topics that interest the design industry, from material innovation to circularity, passing through new market challenges between online and offline experiences. Finally, here, they will try to involve and gather the interest of new generations, using innovative methods. The main sponsors of the 2023 event are Valcucine and Grand Seiko – the latter with a three-year sponsorship that will reach 2025. Among the various installations not to be missed is “Alive in Time,” the space that Grand Seiko dedicates to the rediscovery of time.

Fuorisalone 2023: fourth edition of Alcova
Alcova, the platform curated by Joseph Grima (Space Caviar) and Valentina Ciuffi (Studio Vedèt), returns in 2023. The fifth edition will take place in a place in Milan that has been closed to the public for many years, the Ex-Macello di Porta Vittoria, which was already the site of a legendary exhibition by Paolo Pallucco in 1988 and 1989, and recently partially refurbished and reopened for the occasion. For this new edition, the spaces of the Ex-Macello di Porta Vittoria will host over 70 projects, exploring different and complementary directions of design practice. Among the new features this year is the Alcova Project Space, where the Alcova team will present and promote a selection of projects representing the most interesting languages of the moment. A real show within the show, where there will also be a concept store activated together with OLDER, which, in addition to the collectible design pieces of the Milanese duo, will offer objects designed specifically for this edition.
Superdesign Show
Superdesign Show, the annual event by Superstudio for Milan Design Week, stages some spectacular and ambitious installations that, on the one hand, inform us about the novelties of a selected international production, and on the other, anticipate questions and answers about the functions of the world to come. Among these are the future materials of Materially, and the Smart Home by Samsung. The Stars of Today by Giulio Cappellini, and a series of participations from Asia, illustrating the state of design in that geographic area. Finally, Food Design Stories tackles a highly topical issue: water crisis.

Fuorisalone 2023: Isola Design District
The seventh edition of the Isola Design Festival will open its doors to the public during Fuorisalone, from April 18th to 23rd, 2023. Numerous locations will host over 40 exhibitions and installations, events, and a series of talks that will involve almost 300 designers, design studios, creators, and international producers. After an intense year, full of initiatives in Milan, at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, and the Dubai Design Week, Isola Design Festival 2023 returns to Milan, under the theme “Nothing Happens if Nothing Happens,” a theme that delves into the topic of regeneration, making it the heart of theupcoming edition. The founders of Isola invite all designers to support change, promoting circularity and regeneration. Collective exhibitions, collaborations, and special events will animate the district, in synergy with the seven exhibitions curated by the Isola creative team, led by head scout and curator Juan Torres, and other guest curators.

Porta Venezia Design District
Porta Venezia Design District is the district debuting at Fuorisalone 2023. Dubbed the “OTHER” district, it aims to communicate a contemporary “other” vision of design, in dialogue with the context and values it represents. The territory on which it develops is a historic Milanese area, but one that looks to the future, containing various socio-cultural stratifications. Reflecting inclusivity and diversity, intrinsic characteristics of the district, the newborn district encompasses multiple different areas within the concept of design; design, in fact, is understood here as a catalyst for the ferment that arises from here.
Supporters of Porta Venezia Design District 2023 include:
MEET Digital Culture Center, directed by Maria Grazia Mattei, Founder and President;
RAFFLES MILANO – Istituto di Moda e Design directed by Carlo Forcolini, Compasso d’Oro for lifetime achievement;
MNAD Museo Nazionale Arte Digitale, opening in 2026, directed by Ilaria Bonacossa, former director of Artissima, the International Contemporary Art Fair in Turin;
ASCOBAIRES Milan Corso Buenos Aires Merchants Association and the CONFCOMMERCIO Associative Network Area chaired by Gabriel Meghnagi;
Porta Venezia Milano Rainbow District Merchants Association, chaired by Paolo Sassi.
Tortona Rocks
Tortona Rocks lights up the Fuorisalone 2023 in the Tortona area with a multidisciplinary program focused on technology, circular economy, and social issues. From IKEA to Archiproducts Milano, with a project by Studio Pepe, and from Paola Navone to CESVI, with Fabrizio Spucches’ photographic exhibition, we will discover new virtuous practices that redefine our lifestyles. Among the highlights of the 2023 program are IKEA, with Assembling the Future Together, Archiproducts Milano, with the TERRA project by Studio Pepe, and finally, Paola Navone, who will present the eclectic lottery TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. A new feature of Tortona Rocks 2023 is the first edition of the ALTROVE project, which goes beyond the borders of the Tortona area and explores other areas of Milan. The first area of this new project is Giambellino.
