Alvisi Kirimoto. History, Nature, Work

Dialogue with nature, urban regeneration and attention to social issues are the hallmarks of the firm, founded in Rome in the early 2000s by Massimo Alvisi and Junko Kirimoto, partners in business and in life. In two decades of activity, the firm has made numerous interventions in Italy and abroad, collected for the first time in the volume Alvisi Kirimoto. Storia, natura, lavoro / History, Nature, Work, published by The Plan Editions.

Italy and Japan: the synergy between two worlds

Fusing Italian and Japanese sensibilities, the studio is distinguished by its sartorial approach to design. Massimo focuses on the urban and collective dimensions, while Junko’s vision is more artistic and won her the Golden Thesis Prize awarded by the Japanese Institute of Architects. Her characteristic is in the meticulous attention to detail and minimalist design. These complementary profiles share with their team a passionate and rigorous way of working, as well as a design methodology based on dialogue and experimentation. The firm builds spaces designed through light, as well as respectful and iconic works that combine artificial and natural elements and fully interpret the identity of the place.

Philip Jodidio talks about the firm

Architectural writer and critic Philip Jodidio is the author of the introduction of the firm’s monograph, which will be presented in Florence and Milan.

“Alvisi and Kirimoto’s 20 years of experience has made them sure of one thing: to realize their projects there are ‘methods and processes’ that they share regardless of type. Their works tell their story through shadows, lights, materials left exposed, and the stated desire to be universal combined with the acceptance that everything, even a concrete wall, changes with time and is therefore ephemeral. But the point is not so much the wall as it is the empty space formed by the architects, a space ‘created to be filled.'”
