Artist Simona Uberto talks about marble as a living material
“Marble is a living material: it breathes and changes. Its history is closely linked to the history of art, of sculpture, from classical sculpture and Michelangelo Buonarroti, with his most famous statues, the David and the Rondanini Pietà, to contemporary sculpture, with Marc Quinn. Marble is versatile and changeable, and its color changes depending on the type. As early as the 16th century, Michelangelo personally chose the marble blocks for his works,” explains Simona Uberto, an artist who praises the texture of marble as a historic material.
“Sculpture,” continues Simona Uberto, “is a noble art, and at the Brera Academy, even today, students learn to use chisel and hammer. There are two laboratories dedicated to marble working. With Professor Massimo Pellegrinetti’s course, students become familiar with the ancient art of sculpture. After all, since the times of the ancient Egyptians, marble has been used for the most prestigious buildings, due to its hardness, brightness and versatility.”
Marble is art and fine craftsmanship at once and has been a part of human history for centuries.
